USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360 |
|
Mar 18, 2010 - 2:03 PM - by PhoeniX
|

Don't want to buy a new hard-drive and have to transfer all your content from one to another? well from these pictures it looks like you won't need to transfer any files at all
From this news article on Joystiq it shows pictures (Fairly Legit Pictures) of an apprent up coming update for the xbox to enable the use of Memory Sticks and im guessing USB External Hard Drives but the one catch is that it shows it can only use 16GB to store content
Quote:
Documentation obtained by Joystiq – and subsequently confirmed with two separate sources – reveals that "USB Mass Storage Device Support on Xbox 360" will soon be a reality. The document, authored by a senior software development engineer at Microsoft, states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, a 2010 Xbox 360 system update" will allow consumers to save and load game data from USB devices. The update is purportedly coming in Spring 2010.
Once the update occurs, Xbox 360 owners will be able to download Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Live Indie games, Games on Demand, DLC and Title Updates to the storage device. "USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than MUs (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations-such as installation of a full disc-based title." That's right, you can also store disc-based games to the USB device; however, it will require the disc to be in the tray for authentication, identical to the current functionality.
According to the document, the USB mass storage device must be at least 1GB and the system will do a compatibility check. "The system partition occupies 512 MB of space, and by default the consumer partition occupies the remainder of the device capacity, or 16 GB, whichever is smaller." Upon inserting a blank USB storage device, "consumers are offered two choices: 'Configure now' or 'Customize'." The "Configure now" option will use "the entire device capacity, up to the maximum of 512 MB plus 16 GB" meaning, regardless of the overall size of the device you're using, the Xbox will only enable 16 GB of usable, non-system storage. The "Customize" option will allow you to "preserve some pre-existing, non-console data on the device" such as music.
It should be clear by now that Microsoft is simply pulling out of the Memory Unit business and not the highly lucrative Xbox hard drive business. With an artificial cap of 16 GB – still shy of the 20 GB hard drive that shipped with the original 2005 Xbox Pro and a fraction the size of the currently shipping 120 GB hard drive – USB storage support simply removes the onerous requirement for a Memory Unit on Xbox 360 Arcade units, and brings the Xbox 360 platform a feature that's been present on the PlayStation 3 since that console's 2006 launch.
If you're intent on circumventing Microsoft's cutthroat hard drive pricing the Xbox 360, you can use two USB storage devices for a maximum of 32 GB of usable storage; however, the console "has a fixed limit of two external USB mass storage devices" regardless of whether they're "formatted for the Xbox 360 or not." If you fill all three USB ports on the console, only the first two to be connected will be recognized.

Rumor: Slimmed-Down Xbox 360 Motherboard Images Leaked |
|
Mar 17, 2010 - 4:00 PM - by PhoeniX
|
Joystiq has posted Leaked images of an apprent "Slim" Xbox motherboard, is this fake? or is it a true smaller Xbox motherboard planned for a new Xbox Slim console? maybe it even is for the new Xbox 720? Well i will let you make your mind up on that one but here are the images with some quotes from Joystiq's post:
Quote:
Last week, speculation surrounding a pending announcement of the oft-rumored, slimmed down "Valhalla" model of the Xbox 360 was kicked into high gear, thanks to a Microsoft hiring notice for a motherboard engineer, and Steve Ballmer's reference to "more form factors" for the hardware. Earlier today, a Chinese tech forum purportedly posted a pair of pictures of the newly remodeled motherboard, which has undergone a massive size reduction from the current iteration of Xbox 360 hardware.
A few noteworthy changes in the motherboard (full pictures of which can be found after the jump) are a consolidated GPU/CPU (one of the rumored features of the Valhalla chipset), an extra SATA port, and a much smaller heatsink. Though the design could just be a mock-up from an extraordinarily talented modder, it certainly looks like professional-quality work. We've contacted Microsoft to see if they'll comment on the skinny-fied hardware.

'While it hasn't been officially announced yet, Gears Of War 3 is currently in development at series creator Epic Games. It will continue the story set out in the first two games, which centres on humankind's battle for survival against the nightmarish Locust Horde.'

The site's source said:

"Microsoft's keen to avoid a clash with Halo: Reach and wants Natal to own Christmas. That's why we won't be seeing Gears Of War 3 until next year, but expect a major marketing push ahead of its release."

Codemasters: PSP is a bollocking useless waste of space, iPad, is brilliant |
|
Mar 16, 2010 - 2:21 AM - by Optiplex
|
Codemaster’s VP Gavin Cheshire has lashed out at the PSP and its little brother, the PSP Go, in a magazine interview, calling the handheld a "bollocking useless waste of space". Speaking in this month's Edge magazine, Cheshire said:
Quote:
Well, speaking as a person who bought a PSP, the problem was that I always thought - because it was a better screen than iPod's - that I'd be doing more with it. But it was such a bollocking useless waste of space; just getting stuff on it was ridiculous
"That was its downfall. Relatively speaking, [Codemasters] didn't do too badly on F1 PSP. But regarding the future, I think they've got - well... no.
PSPgo's a lovely device, really smart - but our senior VP bought one the day it came out and has a great story, because he ended up on some customer support line just trying to do basic stuff. He had to re-download his software, do an immediate firmware update, and that's your user experience.
Sony just hasn't got it right. Stuff like that will make people leave it alone.
|
But when asked about Apple's newest device, Cheshire seems to have a positive outlook on the new iPad and said the handheld is "brilliant" and believes there's potential despite the App Store being swamped with content.
